Topic: The Current Spread of the GGB
Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes
Objectives:
At the end of this session, the participants should:
(i) Appreciate the extend of the international spread of the GGB.
ii) Know the main channels or means through which the GGB is transmitted.
iii) Know the extent and speed of the spread of the GGB in Kenya.
Target Group:
- Subject Matter Specialists (SMS's)
- Technical Assistants (TA's)
- Farmers
- Civil and administration policemen and customs officers
- Local leaders
- Individual traders and personnel of trading organizations
- Magistrates, members of parliament and judges.
Training Materials:
i) Wall map or overhead transparencies of the world showing the spread of the GGB (see hand-out)ii) Wall map or overhead transparencies of East Africa showing the spread of the GGB (see hand-out)
iii) Pointing rod
iv) Clearly labelled samples of materials which have been attacked by the GGB, i.e.:
- maize grains
- maize stalks and cobs
- dried cassava
- timber/woodv) Magnifying glasses (lenses)
vi) Blackboard or flip chart stand with flip chart paper
vii) Chalk sticks and blackboard eraser or felt pen.
Process:
a) The trainer should, first of all, avail a magnifying glass (lens) to each participant.
5 minutes
Recapitulation of Ecology of GGB
b) The participants should then be encouraged to recapitulate what they learnt during the session on the ecology of the GGB by naming the products/items on which the GGB feeds or which may be attacked by the GGB. The trainer should either write down or draw each item/product mentioned on the BB or the FC.
15 minutes
Exhibition of Materials Attacked by GGB
c) The trainer should explain that GGB is capable of hiding in many items. Then, he/she should pass around well-labelled samples (Materials iv) above), allowing each participant a minute or so to examine the sample so as to recognize any of the following:- presence of GGB beetles;
- presence of GGB eggs, larvae or pupae;
- presence of bores/perforations (holes) made by GGB.It is worth emphasizing here that, the more samples the trainer passes around, the more convinced the participants will be about the dangers of the GGB and the multiplicity of the channels or media through which it may be spread.
5 minutes
Augmentation of List of Items Which May Be Attacked by the GGB
d) The trainer should, after the exhibition, add to the list of items which may be attacked by the GGB generated by the participants in b) above any of the items exhibited but which had not been mentioned by the participants.e) The trainer should then explain that the GGB can move from one place to another, i.e. get spread around by:
i) flying through the airii) hiding in any of the items mentioned and listed in d) above which may be moved from one place to another by people. It should be mentioned that, even if only the eggs are moved about, they will eventually hatch into larvae, pupae and beetles.
5 minutes
Emphasis on Movement of Food Products
The trainer should ensure to enthusiastically emphasize that, movement of GGB in any form (eggs, larvae, pupae, beetles) by humans moving products such as maize grain around has been shown to be responsible for the fastest and widest spread of the GGB.
5 minutes
Discussion of Movement of Food Products
f) The-trainer should, after the explanation, lead and allow a brief discussion of the extent to which food items, especially maize grain (food for the GGB) is moved to and fro in the country and in their own locations.
5 minutes
g) After the discussion, the trainer should visualize the world map, showing the current spread of the GGB. The world spread should then be narrated by means of the notes in Hand-Out 3 below.
10 minutes
h) After narrating the spread on the world map, the trainer should visualize the map of East Africa and then explain the current spread of the GGB from Tanzania to Kenya and within Kenya.
5 minutes
Question Time
i) Participants should be allowed time to ask questions about the spread of the GGB. The trainer should encourage participants who know the correct answers to give them. He/she should only come in when it is clear that none of the participants can offer even a crude answer which may be built on. At this stage, the trainer should also ask questions on key issues to ensure that the lesson has been learnt.
5 minutes
j) After question time, the trainer should summarize the lesson by:i) Briefly mentioning the items which may be attacked by the GGB;ii) Briefly narrating how the GGB has spread from Central America to East Africa over the years and how it has so far spread in Kenya.
