Objective of the Mission
|
Participate as a team leader in the multi-disciplinary analysis of the post-production and marketing systems for yams and cassava in Oyo State, Nigeria, from July to November 1999. The objective of the study is to identify bottlenecks in the post-production chain of operations and work out recommendations for improvements

Professional Background
|
University degree in agricultural economics; broad practical experience in policy issues, economic and institutional analysis, experience in multi-disciplinary teamwork and strong working knowledge of PRA techniques; perfect command of the English language

Tasks
|
- Organise the mission under the supervision of the Food and Agricultural Industries Service of FAO in collaboration with relevant national institutions
- Establish contacts with governmental structures, research institutes, farmers' organisations, private companies, NGOs, donors and other stakeholders
- Review the secondary information available and prepare a detailed work plan
- Select the survey districts during field visits and interviews with key informants
- Recruit research assistants for field surveys
- Organise a pre-study workshop to raise awareness of the post-production systems approach, assist team building, involve stakeholders in the study design and train the team members and assistants in PRA survey methods
- Conduct and supervise the survey activities, assist in preparing the guideline questions and choosing appropriate PRA tools
- Conduct institutional analysis, identify actors in the post-production system, analyse government policies and strategies relating to post-production operations
- Analyse and interpret the collected data with team members and stakeholders during a workshop
- Compile a draft report and initiate a review and comment process
- Deliver the final report to FAO
- Present the final report during a workshop for stakeholders, work out recommendations and initiate a follow-up process
